In this episode of The Joy of Fishing Television, Coach is joined by his brother John Van Burger, Fred Von Seggern and Del Miller as they venture to Crane Prairie Reservoir in Central Oregon. This reservoir is home to the “Cranebow” which are large native rainbow trout ranging in size from a few pounds upwards to 20 pounds!
These big, beautiful, hard fighting rainbows like eating bugs, big bugs from the surrounding vegetation. In fact, the guys show you have to catch your own bait beforehand! Spin rods, fly rods, bobbers and bait…the fishing action is non-stop and it will keep you on the edge of your seat!
Then, Wayne brings a cooler filled with fresh trout to Chef Shawn Hanlin at Oregon Coast Culinary Institute. They prepare a quick and easy French campfire dish called “Trout Grenobloise” which will make your mouth water! From the landing net to frying pan…the trout action is well at hand!

try it!
Son, I fished that lake a few years back. Canoe, bottle of Sheep Dip, 3 foot a leader, 1/2 ounce barrel sinker yadayadayada. Son, we slaughtered them cutbows. Couldn’t keep em off the eagle claws. Glitter red power goo all day long. Couple of drunk idiots a few hundred yards from us were havin a go for some catfish. Hollerin all day long in the pourin rain. Numskulls.
Wayne–Thanks for the great video about Crane Prairie Reservoir. I used to work with Fred Von Seggern Sr. at Oregon City High School when Freddie was young. Your video has renewed such great memories and has brought back recollections of fishing at Crane back in the days.
Hey Wayne, have enjoyed your shows, missed this one on TV but remember talking to John about it and the use of bugs. If you would still like to do the East Lake Kokanee on a fly and the may fly hatch let me know, fished it only 4 times last year but caught a minimum of 50 fish each time. Only hooked about one every 4 hits, but it is a blast on light rods. Spent most of the summer fishing Crane with the chironimids, tough to stop when you catch at least a 5 pound fish every time.
Caught a glimpse of you at Roseburg sports show and wished I had a chance to talk to you. I love your show and wish there was more. I live in Glide and it is so nice to see someone who loves southern Oregon on T.V. great job Wayne. Id love to hear back from you. Brian
